Seven Tips to Keep Your Body Cool During Summer

Summer is always hot. You should drink enough water to keep yourself cool during summer season. Here are seven different tips to keep you cool during summer season.

1. Avoid foods that heat you up:

When the body is already hot, the one last thing you need is to rev it up with spicy food. Go easy on the chillis, curries, hot peppers and salsas. Sour foods like cheese, yoghurt, and sour cream all add too much heat in the Pitta season. Also, limit salty foods – they will leave you dehydrated and worsen your skin. Small amounts of ginger, cumin and black pepper are ok but say no to cayenne. Stay away from tomatoes, onion, garlic, beets and spinach when you can. Alcohol has a heating effect as well.

Healthy Foods

2. Favour foods that cool you down:

Sweet, bitter and the astringent foods are the ones to go for. Good examples are milk, butter and ghee. Olive, sunflower and the coconut oils are perfect for balancing Pitta. Sweet, ripe fruits like avocados, cherries, grapes, plums, pineapples, peaches and mangoes are perfect. Cilantro and mint are excellent, and a little cinnamon is subtle. Asparagus, sweet potatoes, cucumbers, broccoli, green leafy vegetables, zucchini and green beans are all good.

Healthy Drinks

3. Avoid ice cold drinks:

While we need to keep our body cool, it is even more important to keep your digestion system active.  Your digestive system is like a fire that is accountable for converting food into energy. When the sparks of your digestive fire are burning in an equitable way, you are able to assimilate all the right bits you need from your food whilst reducing the not-so-good bits. However, when you take that iced-water with lunch, you are effectively putting out the flames of your digestive fire. So lay off the ice and go for the room temperature. It will be assimilated into your body much faster, and you will feel dehydrated more quickly.

4. Eat at the right time:

An important part of adjusting Pitta and keeping cool is to eat your main meal in the middle of the day when your digestive fire stays strongest. Skipping meals is also a sure fire way to upset Pitta – notice how cranky you feel when you miss your lunch.

5. Make time to play:

Balance the strength of the heat with less energy in your work. Build in time for the game. When Pitta is out of balance, we tend to be driven, demanding, impatient and we overdo it. That, in turn, creates more imbalance. So ease back and make some time for fun.

6. Exercise with a splash:

If you are working out, then do it at the point of the day when nature is most relaxed. Early morning is the best. Second Best is during the early evening. Going for a run in the mid of the day when the sun is at its strongest is going to worsen Pitta. Light exercise is suggested such as yoga, tai chi, walking and best of all, swimming.

7. Turn down the temperature of your mind:

As is the mind, so is the body. The most important way to settle down the mind is to build in some regular time for the meditation each day. However, there are many ways to turn down the dial on that busy, frazzled mind. Listen to some excellent music, take a walk in nature or practice some conscious breathing to soothe your soul.

Relax with music
